about

This six-song “Black America Vol. 1” EP features six covers that were recorded right after the initial recording of the “…Goes SKA!” LP…just to keep things fun and interesting during the somewhat tedious mixing/mastering process. The artists that L.L. chose to tip his Kangol to on this volume are Gil Scott-Heron, Art Ensemble of Chicago, John Coltrane, Rufus Thomas, Bad Brains, & Jimi Hendrix.

This of course doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface in terms of paying tribute to exceptional and influential African American musicians, hence the “Vol. 1” tag. Some folks that have perked their ears to this collection in the past have told L.L. that this is one of the most creative records he’s ever done, even though it’s all covers, which he tends to take as a compliment. In a lot of ways WRITING a song is easy, but creating a convincing reproduction in a style that’s somewhat left-of-center to the original takes a lot of thought, love, and care.

So dig this slab all the way down to the roots, and keep the love coming.
